CHEERFULNESS
Definition: Being in good spirits; merry; reflecting willingness or a feeling of cheer.
1. Cheerfulness comes from the heart.
Proverbs 15:13a A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance.
Proverbs 15:15b He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Ecclesiastes 11:9a Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth.
Matthew 12:35a A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things.
2. The Lord is the source of everlasting joy.
1 Chronicles 16:27 Glory and honour are in His presence; strength and gladness are in His place.
Nehemiah 8:10b The joy of the Lord is your strength.
Psalm 4:7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
Psalm 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in Thee: I will sing praise to Thy Name, O Thou most High.
Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Psalm 21:1 The king shall joy in Thy strength, O Lord; and in Thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
Psalm 32:11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
Psalm 43:4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise Thee, O God my God.

3. Cheerfulness is a sign and a result of faith and trust in the Lord.
Psalm 5:11 Let all those that put their trust in Thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because Thou defendest them: let them also that love Thy Name be joyful in Thee.
Psalm 13:5 I have trusted in Thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation.
Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him.
Psalm 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy Name.
Psalm 63:7 Because Thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice.
Psalm 64:10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in Him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
Psalm 128:1,2 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in His ways. 2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

4. We, as Christians, have more to be cheerful about than anyone else in the whole world!
Deuteronomy 33:29a Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord, the shield of thy help, and Who is the sword of thy excellency!
Psalm 16:6 The lines [God’s blessings] are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.
Psalm 35:9 And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in His salvation.
Psalm 40:16 Let all those that seek Thee rejoice and be glad in Thee: let such as love Thy Salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.
Psalm 63:5,6 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise Thee with joyful lips: 6 When I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.
Psalm 84:10 For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Psalm 126:3 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

5. Cheerfulness can help us overcome almost any obstacle.
Psalm 51:8,12 [King David prays for the joy of the Lord after a big breaking:] Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice. … 12 Restore unto me the joy of Thy Salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.
Psalm 126:5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Proverbs 17:22a A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.
Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His Salvation.
Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the Gospel of the grace of God.

6. The Lord can keep you cheerful during tests and trials.
Psalm 16:8,9 I have set the Lord always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
Psalm 30:5,11 For His anger endureth but a moment; in His favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. … 11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: Thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness.
Isaiah 30:29 Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel.
Isaiah 35:10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Isaiah 61:3 [God anointed Jesus:] to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.

Jude 24 [Jesus] is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.
7. When we’re walking in the Spirit, we’ll be cheerful under almost any circumstances.
Romans 14:17 For the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Galatians 5:22a But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.

Hebrews 10:34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in Heaven a better and an enduring substance.
8. Cheerful giving — whether of ourselves or of our material blessings — is an expression of love.
1 Chronicles 29:9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
Proverbs 14:21b He that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
2 Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. [See also 1 Chronicles 29:17; Acts 20:35]
Romans 12:8b,9a He that giveth, let him do it with simplicity,… he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. 9a Let love be without dissimulation [hypocrisy].
9. Cheerfulness is contagious.
Psalm 34:2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
Psalm 119:74a They that fear Thee will be glad when they see me.
2 Corinthians 1:24a [Christian leaders are to spread the joy of the Lord amongst believers] We … are helpers of your joy.
10. Wisdom brings cheerfulness.
Proverbs 3:13,18 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. … 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
